This is a very damning critique of the work by Taibbi and Schellenberger on the so-called 'censorship industrial complex'. I'm curious about Taibbi and Schellenberger's responses to this. And also whether the Free Press will address any of this, with respect to their reporting.
Have you read Jesse Singal’s multiple exposés of Shellenberger’s ‘journalism’? Shellenberger went before Congress falsely insinuating that someone was a foreign spy. It turned out that Shellenberger was cutting and pasting his research from the Wikipedia page of someone with a vaguely similar sounding name. Shellenberger quietly corrects the error with a brief note at the bottom of the webpage. The guy is a joke who takes no responsibility for his errors and massive incompetence.
he worked hard to sell Obama as the villain in the financial crisis. He used to have huge reach on the progressive blogs working a story that Obama had sold out to wall street. It was a story with similar levels of truth to the censorship one.
Taibbi is a deeply annoying idiot but the most annoying thing for me is that his reputation is based on one phrase in one article. Describing Goldman Sachs as a ‘vampire squid’ isn’t even a good analogy! It’s dumb!
You know I have never had a problem with censorship in Social Media. Television networks censor. They don’t run any wack-job commercial making false claims. Nor do they allow exploitation of children, nor do they allow foreign produced media. Some networks try to actually source their news. Some don’t. My god, if you watch Fox, they lie everyday. They omit other points of view. Free press. So if Twitter/Elon decides to drop posts he sees as offensive or untrue he drops them. If the stories are negative on any platform they are promoted by the algorithm. Who said social media was supposed to be fair or even publish the truth. Who says they can’t post whatever they want. Who says politicians can’t demand they remove something. Most times that is ignored. People are slandered all of the time. If the government wants to step in and pressure social media to use caution in promoting misinformation about a worldwide pandemic why can’t they?
Social Media cannot be forced to do anything. They are unregulated. The tech bros that own them control their content.
Twitter should go away. It is far worse now that Elon took over. IHell the President uses it to announce policy. Well, Trump now uses his own social media first. And do you think he allows posts that don’t endorse him? He even sells early access to his policy announcements to allow insider trading.
So pardon me for not giving a damn about the so called censorship. It’s the free press. If they want to ignore government requests there is nothing to stop them. They have less regulation than network TV for god sake.
If people turn to social media as their source for news they will get what they get. What they deserve.
I personally think social media in general is a cesspool. I prefer Substack because its emphasis is on writing, not memes. TikTok started with fun videos, now it is also a political forum. As is Instagram which used to be for photographs. Don’t even get me start about Facebook. It’s a hateful place where hate is specifically promoted. X is Elons and he is a racist megalomaniac. It personally pisses me of that politicians, the government and news organizations are still on there. They give money to a fascist white supremest.
I guess my point is The Bros are the ultimate controllers of content. Any effort by the government to control actual content has really been about those posts that cause danger or harm to individuals. There is virtually no legal restraint.

What happened to Talibi? He used to be a pretty journalist digging into stories but not conspiracies.

Taibbi was a darling of the "left" during the Obama administration, but even then he was a conduit for right wing propaganda and disinformation.
